You hear a lot about expanding or stepping out of your comfort zone, in order to grow. That is completely acceptable and encouraged, as Stress Creates Strength. However, where is the line for that with pitchers like us, whom are extreme creatures of habit? Naturally, we cling to our routines, because they are the foundation to our consistency and success. With that being said, When, Where, Why, and How to step out of The Comfort Zones of Pitchers?
As an athlete, one must be flexible and able to adjust. Not only does it enhance performance against the elements, it prevents a stalemate in preparation and training. Not even the most stoic, robotic like demeanor can keep an impeccable path to taking the mound. Things happen. It’s how you roll with it is most palpable. By no means am I suggesting to submit to distractions. It is a matter of remaining unwavering in the face of complication.
The Comfort Zones of Pitchers
Expanding the Approach to Increase Discipline
Starters and relievers alike both have their routines as they enter battle. Starters are on a meticulous, 5 day cycle. Relievers prepare themselves to be ready everyday when the phone rings. Following and maintaining their individual routines give them the necessary level of comfort when they take the mound. This comfort is backed by their results. These strict regimens are developed through years of trial and error, with some superstition thrown in the mix.
When a competitor is forbidden from his routine or even has the cycle infringed upon, a certain degree of insecurity will creep in for the pitcher. The urgency of preparing for a start will induce panic when disrupted. Even for the mentally strongest.
Nonetheless, a challenge to the routine is inevitable. Rain delays, pregame ceremonies, subpar bullpen mounds, unfortunate travel conditions, disrupted sleep schedule, bad mattress, no mattress, unfavorable food options, etc. These are many of the elements that baseball players deal with on a regular basis. Many of them become customary factors of this great game, of which we are fortunate to take part. As critics think that deters us from excelling in this great game… It only increases the desire.

Growth Through Experience
Battle tested through baseball and life, allows for one to improvise when faced with adversity. Handling the disturbances and minimizing the negative possibilities before all is lost, keeps the preparation on schedule. A consistent pitcher is aware of the variables that tend to get him off track. The more rationally he remains through these setbacks, the faster he will return to form.
Thus, enhancing the production levels.
When faced with a possible digression from form, the ability to say NO, keeps the routine intact. As one knows what works best, they will not allow for detractors and impulsive ideas to disrupt what they are working towards.
The Comfort Zones of Pitchers
The Silver Lining
Pushing one out of their comfort zone does create enhancements. As one remains reclusive throughout their routine, they may tend to reject adjustments. To such a degree, creating extreme tunnel vision. If it ain’t broke, don’t try and fix it. Absolutely!!! However, when a pitcher has had a rough stretch of appearances, he should look to the source of struggle and seek to make the necessary repairs in the routine.
Often, pitching is a series of tweaks. When you have had your fair share of significant success, a major overhaul is not necessary. Focus on your strengths and what got you to where you are now as a pitcher. Keep in mind, all adjustments and changes are unique to the individual. Every pitcher will react and adapt differently. Some like to play with fire and see how it ends up, others will not expand their shadow more than what the light allows. Regardless, simplicity tends to flow the smoothest, universally speaking.
