RED PITCH, WHITE PITCH,

Naturally, since you are a pitcher, somewhere around you is a baseball within an arm’s length I am sure.  Now, get the baseball and hold it with a 4 seam grip. Toss the ball up and tell me what color you see. Red or White?  You probably say Red, correct? Now do the same thing with a 2 seam grip. OK, now you see Red. The 4 seamer was white. Why is this important? Because this is what the hitter sees. So now you can be even more deceptive and make him hate life after you are done with him. Understanding the Red pitch, White pitch sequence just enhances the dynamic of pitching.

How So?

Simply by pairing your red pitches together in the same locations as well as your white pitches. Just keep on adding to the guessing game that comes with the endeavor of a 70% failure rate for the best. As humans, we react to each color in a different way. Undoubtedly, as the competitor that you are, there is a psychological advantage that is there for the taking.

The White

As you already know, the 4 seam fastball is a white pitch. Also are a 4 seam curveball and 4 seam change up (depending on the spin you get). This is why a high fastball sets up your curveball. When you can piggy back these secondary pitches off of your 4 seamer in the same location, you will see your success increase.

The Red

So what compliments a 2 seam fastball of the rotating red variety? A 2 seam change up thrown in the same spot. It’s hard to differentiate the two. Especially since the movement on the 2 are similar. If you have these two pitches, rock the combo with full conviction. The hitter won’t know what is coming at him. The change of speed will be even harder to pick up and adjust.

A split finger or fork ball are also red pitches, just with a significantly slower spin rate.

Slider, The Wild Card

When you throw the Slider very well, the hitter will see the red dot. So what? He still has to find a way to get the barrel on the ball as the Slider breaks sharply out of the zone on two planes. When you can throw the Slider even better, with more depth, the dot will be on the bottom of the baseball. This means that the hitter will see a white pitch. As a result, the hitter will assume a 4 seam fastball….until he has another thing coming.  We all know how that result plays out.
