My back surgery was a success and the pain in my leg has subsided. Thankfully! It was a harsh last few months of this agony on one limb. A big thank you to all those who continue to send in their well wishes. I am extremely grateful as I have a lot to look forward to everyday. I have been given a new outlook on life. On this topic of new beginnings, I want to address an occurrence which may be unaccustomed and excitable to you. In other circumstances, could be an inspiration if your mound status is currently in a rut.

Most pitchers have made this random career transformation at some point. It is also highly rewarding to experience it when a friend or teammate makes the leap, or while coaching.

Try Pitching

Take A Chance On Your Baseball Career

I am talking about when a player is asked to pitch or chooses to get on the mound the first time. No matter how raw the fresh arm may be, you can usually get a sense right away whether or not they have a knack for being on the bump. Whatever the visual combination is: fluidity, competitiveness, instincts, or just a blazing fastball, it is fun to see the emergence of a huge upside commence.

As a newbie pitcher, you have nothing to lose. When you take the mound, you have the main intent to go out and battle, because that is how the game is played.  Now that killer instinct is magnified, as the whole game revolves around you….and you love it! You embrace the challenge of having control over the game. Especially the opposing lineup. If you have a cross town beef with the clean up hitter on the other team, what better way to resolve it!

When you give a solid performance the first time out, regardless of the result, it creates a buzz around the team. A substance that the squad can rally around as everyone sees a new asset has been found.

A Life Changing Endeavor!

Take A Chance on Your Baseball Career

To you, the new pitcher, it awakens the dominant part of your brain. You quickly realize that pitching is a whole different beast than hitting. You are the Alpha. The pace is new, the intensity is wild, and the adrenaline has catapulted you in to another dimension of living. As a result of this intensity, most are hooked instantly! Once you realize that you have the most control over the outcome of a game, you want more of it!!!!

For every time you went 0-4 as a hitter or couldn’t come up with the big knock for your team, you can instantly let it all go when you discover one thing….

How much fun it is to embarrass and DOMINATE hitters!!!!  No slugger is exempt from it. As the King of the Hill stands on the mound, watching the hitter go back to the dugout in disgust, you welcome your next victim.

As one becomes more comfortable out there, he will try new things to expand his value. Quickly, you see how to read swings and expand the plate. Many of the hitter’s weaknesses and vulnerabilities come to the foreground of exposure instantly. These also show up even before you learn how to change speeds and make the ball move….just saying.

A dynamic aspect of pitching that which everyone benefits, is that the feedback is instant. You will quickly learn where not to throw the ball to certain hitters, and where to keep throwing it until they make an adjustment. As the competitor that you are, you personally accept the accountability that there is work to be done moving forward. As a result, WINNING!!!!

It’s GO Time!

Take A Chance on Your Baseball Career

Many pitchers, even in Major League Baseball, gave pitching a GO in their teenage years when asked to help out the team. Some not even until they were in college. Their early on success with the craft possibly hinted to them that this is their best career option. Don’t assume that all great pitchers have been dealing since little league on up. That is not always the case.

When you have the moment of truth with yourself, that pitching may be the best path for you, this is when it is time to get serious and upgrade your arsenal. The Slider is the best compliment to a raw pitcher getting his feet wet. It is thrown the most like the fastball, both with arm action and mindset. You can retain your natural mentality without sacrificing ability in order to make hitters look bad…

Why NOT Take A Shot At Pitching?

Take A Chance on Your Baseball Career

You never know what you have in you, until you test yourself in competition. In my experience, I have seen quite a few players who received Division 2 or 3 college offers as hitters. They decided to go to a JUCO and build on their pitching repertoire and after 2 years get a Division 1 offer. Better yet, get drafted. It is worth it to take a chance on your baseball career. Baseball is a game from which late bloomers can benefit immensely. The scouts don't look at high school and college players, judging them on how good they are now. It is how good can they be when they are 25 years old.

Additionally, there are more opportunities to make a team as a pitcher than a position player. Most MLB clubs nowadays carry 13 pitchers, more than 50% of the 25 man roster. Pitching and especially bullpen usage has become more specialized and dynamic when it comes to shortening games. This enhancement is trickling down to lower levels also.
Which side of history do you want to be on?
